You will not become an expert with these tips, but they sure will put all the chances on your side.
These few tips might be old hat, but the goal here is to give you an overview of things you might have forgot or did not know!
If you pick-up but one idea out of this text I will have succeeded in my effort.
- Fish where the fish is!!!
Sure you will tell me that you fish where the fishes are!
But many anglers will cast their flies anywhere there is water. You have to look for the main lays, where the food flows and where there is a safe place for the trout to feed.
These holding holes offers protection and a good food supply at the same time.
You will find these places under the banks, under large branches that bend over the river, under water logs, around large boulders, riffles, etc.... Sometimes you will not find fish in these places but in knee high water where the tubulance of the water gives a good cover.
There must be a secure place where the trout can wait for it's food without being seen by anglers or any other predators.
- See without being seen!!!
When you arrive at the river's edge, take the time to look at the bushes. You will be surprise to find a multide of insects that will dictate what you will fish with. Thae a look at the river using these same bushes as cover. Look for those primary holding holes, find out where the fish are feeding. You MUST find these holes before the trout sees you: "see without being seen!!!"
Your sure to augment your chances of hooking a fish if you follow this tip.
- Choose a fly for the circumstance!!!
Many fly fishers tend to always fish with the same favorite flies. But your selection of flies should be more varied as per the time of day, the water temparature, the level of the water, the season, etc... If you can see a trout and she does not want to take what you offer her, then changes your fly, or change the sixe of the fly you are now fishing.
If this does not work, then take a drastic measure and put on a monster large fliy. Sometimes this can make the difference between a bad fishing day to a good fishing day.
At night, choose a fly that is light in colour, more attractive and more colourful.
- Leaders importance
It is important to remember that your leader is one of the principal element of your fishing gear.
Alaways use a leader that will fit your fly and present it in a proper way.
For difficult trout and you are fishing with very small flies, use long (12ft) and thin leader, with 7x (1 lb.) or 8x (1/2 lb.) tippet.
If the wind makes your casting difficult, them shorthening your leader might be the way to go.
At dusk or night, the leader does not have to be so long as the window of the trout is like yours, quite dark.
- Change position!!!
You would be surprised to know that many fly fishers stay at the same place sometimes for 30-40 minutes. I apply the rule "5 casts, 1 step". You can for change places by coming out of the river and then re-enter at another place, but for myself I like to walk gentl in the stream.
- Expériment!!!
I am not well placed
