Time of the Terrestrials
Terrestrials live and die on land, The most common are the ant, the grass hopper, and the crickets. These insects live on the grass and branches of the river's edge and sometimes they blown by rain and wind and sometimes just by being negligent they fall into the rivers and streams. The trout eat them up as if it were their last meal. The attact them with ferocity and can be very selective.
Our river's edge have been blessed by the number of land insects that live and mate there. Many patterns have been invented by some of our own tiers. Just to name one, the Joliette Grasshopper by Mr. Bernard Boulard of Joliette, Québec. This famous fly have contributed to many monster trout being captured.
Of all the land insects, the ant has to be the most popular food for trout. Some days the trout will stuff themselves on them and that is all they will take. You have to go "fishing" using larger sizes to provoke strikes. You will have to cast you imitations over surface feeding trout to be able to attract them. I, myself like sizes 16 and 18. They can be black, brown or red with wings or not!.
When trout really dont want the ants, then I like to use the crickets. The attacks are more severe. The smaller ones are sucked in with a gentle slurp but the larger ones are just devoured with passion. My most prefered ones are the "Criquet" and the Jassid. I always have some with me just in case...
In june if the mayflies and the caddises are not active then I will use the crickets.
You can tell when they are out and ready for fish food. You can hear them at night playing their favorite songs. With the crickets, this time of year will bring you the grass hoppers. These two families of insects are famous to catch large trout. Patterns that I use frequetly are the Joliette Hopper of Mr. Boulard and the Jassid of Vince Marinaro. I have them in sizes 14 to 18. I have others but these are my most prefered.
Fish them on the banks, under cuts and under the branches that overhangs the river. They do not make it the middle of the river, so fish them close to the shore.
Terrestrial fishing is most exciting. When nothing else works, terrestrials will make the most shy fish come to the surface. Dont be shy to use them, the are on rivers, creeks, lakes and ponds. They are everywhere.
