I am often asked how to tie a tandem fly. I will try to explain in a simple manner how to do this.
First, choose the hooks that you will need for your tandem fly. The back hook will be known as the "trailer" hook. The trailer hook should be smaller by one number, this is a personal opinion and not a rule.
Place a 20 lbs piece of mono in the eye of the trailer hook to half the hook shank.
Tie thightly with 3/0 nylon thread.
Secure with Crazy Glue or Zap a Gap.
Tie in your tail and body at this time and finish the head.
Tie the mono that extend from your trailer hook to the top on the main hook and tie in with thread.
Add a drop of Crazy Glue or Zap a Gap.
Tie your fly without adding the tail.
Be very careful not hook yourself to the trailer hook, it can bite very easely. Prevention! I place a small piece of cork on the barb of the trailer hook during the tying. I had to go see a doctor once to remove a tandem from my finger, not a pleasant experience!!!
oh yea! the doctor kept the fly as a souvenir.
Note: Without the crazy glue the tandem will not survive an attack, it will slip.
